Tucano T1 plane crashed by Prince William?

April 14, 2009

Prince William operated the Tucano T1 plane wrongly leading to overcooking the turbo during his training stint with air force last year, CNN has reported. This could have damaged the plane but it didn’t happen.

Britain’s Daily Mail has repoeted the incident. “He flicked the wrong switch on shutdown and overcooked the turbo,” Watt told the paper. “I think he switched it back on.

The Tucano T1 is a two seat turboprop basic trainer used by the Royal Air Force. It is a variant of Short Tucano T1. The Short Tucano was developed by the British Short Brothers company in order to meet a requirement to replace the Jet Provost as the basic trainer for the RAF, as laid down in Air Staff Target 412. It is an adaptation of the Embraer EMB-312 Tucano fitted with the more powerful 1,100 shp (820 kW) Garrett turboprop engine in place of the EMB-312’s 750 shp (560 kW) Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 engine, to give higher climb performance.

The Short Tucano T Mk 1 is a two-engine turboprop training aircraft of the Royal Air Force in 1985. It is an adaptation of the Brazilian Embraer AT-27 Tucano, but with a Garrett TPE331 turboprop.

The Tucano was built in 1985 as a successor to the former school BAC Jet Provost aircraft chosen. The Garrett-Turbopropmotor generated, however, a whole series of engine problems. This enabled the aircraft until 1989 in service.

Besides the engine, there are other differences to the Embraer Tucano:

* Stronger aircraft frame.
* New cockpit identical to the BAE Hawk
* Four-blade propeller, instead of three-blade propeller
* Ventral air brake, and new wing tips
* Martin-Baker MB 8LC ejection seats for both crew members

The service proved to be the Short Tucano 70% cheaper than its predecessor. It has a greater endurance and range than the radiative driven BAC Jet Provost.
